DESCRIPTION:The Earl’s Bu\, Orphir\, Orkney. The beating heart of a Norse Estate\, from feasting to  trade.The Round Church and Earl’s Drinking Hall at Orphir form a focus of a much larger estate\, which supported the Late Norse Earl’s in agricultural resources as well as providing homes for their wider retinue. The building of a Norse horizontal mill by the Earls added to the central focus of the Estate which can be broadly identified through a study of the Rentals of 1492.  The antiquarian excavations of the so-called Drinking Hall brought little understanding of either the complexity\, nature or extent of the Norse remains. Through excavations completed in 1993\, the role of the mill and\, more significantly the middens upon which it was constructed and then infilled after it went out of use\, we now have a much fuller understanding of the wider economy of the site\, in particular through international trade as well as the management of local cattle and sheep herds and island wide fish resources.  Through excavation\, survey and geophysical investigation\, documentary research and antiquarian re-assessment\, it is now finally possible to situate the status of the Earl’s Bu at the heart of the Norse Earldom in Orkney.\nDr Colleen Batey holds honorary Research Fellowships at the University of the Highlands and Islands and the University of Durham  and is Honorary Professor at Hunter College\, New York. For the past 50 years she has been involved in research on the Viking Age in Scotland  and the North Atlantic\, both as director of excavations and teacher. Since 2004\, Colleen has combined her research interests with lecturing on  expedition ships travelling widely throughout the Viking world from the Black Sea to Canada!  She  has published extensively\, both books and journal articles and given invited/endowed  lectures in Canada\, USA\, Iceland and Scandinavia. In 2000 Colleen was the UK representative for the major exhibition created by the Smithsonian Museum\, Washington and which toured several North American venues with visitor figures in the millions. More recently\, on her retirement from Glasgow University in 2019\, she moved home to the Orkney Mainland\, where her beautiful 1700s house and garden lie on the shores of Scapa Flow. In her retirement she has been focussing on bringing to fruition aher long standing research on the Earl’s Bu in Orphir Orkney.

SUMMARY:Winter Zoom talks 2025\, Peter McNiven\, Placenames and dating peat clearance on the Carse of Stirling
DESCRIPTION:. It will attempt to use place-names as a tool for the rough dating of peat clearance on the carse basically between Stirling and Falkirk\, showing peat had been cleared\, or potentially so\, for around 1500 years. It also argues that Lord Kames’ clearance of peat at Blairdrummond was part of the latest phase\, not the earliest as some modern writers suggest. The place-names are basically Brittonic\, Gaelic\, and Scots\, with modern Scottish Standard English names around Blairdrummond dating from around 1800 or so\, but the talk will concentrate on the Medieval period.\nPeter McNiven is a former coachbuilder who went to Glasgow University at the age of 32. He studied history and archaeology. After he graduated he did several bouts of digging in places like Shetland\, Kintyre\, and behind IKEA in Glasgow! He got into place-names when he did my masters and then completed a PhD entitled ‘Gaelic Place-names and the social history of Gaelic speakers in Medieval Menteith’. He was then employed on a project at Glasgow University that produced two books\, Place-names of Kinross-shire and Place-names of Clackmannashire. He is currently working freelance\, and also fulfilling duties as a foster carer.

DESCRIPTION:Brief biogs\nEric Gardner\, Ed and Ailsa Smith completed the Certificate of Field Archaeology in 2016. They started volunteering with the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership (CAVLP) in 2016 and on Murray Cook’s digs from 2017. In 2020 we got together with other CAVLP volunteers to form the Clutha Archaeology Group.\nSummary\nThis talk will describe our survey work and digs at the Avon Gorge promontory site in Chatelherault Country Park in South Lanarkshire. The site was discovered by Eric Gardner and Ed Smith in 2016 when conducting a field survey of Chatelherault during the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership (CAVLP) project. The digs were undertaken by members of Clutha Archaeology Group under the direction of Andy Jepson of Archaeology Scotland. SUMMARY:Winter Zoom Talks 2024 Dr Paul Murtagh  Shining light into a black hole: Investigating the Iron Age of Lanarkshire
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:This talk will highlight the discoveries made during the excavation of two Iron Age sites in South Lanarkshire\, Black Hill\, Lesmahagow\, and Castle Qua\, Lanark\, which took place in 2017. The work was carried out by Northlight Heritage as part of the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership\, supported by the University of Glasgow and volunteers from the local area. This part of Scotland has seen little in the way of sustained research into the Iron Age and the discoveries made here allow us to begin to understand the ways in which the people of this area lived during this period and how this relates to evidence from the wider region.  \nBio: Dr Paul Murtagh has over twenty years experience of working in the archaeology sector and has been involved in projects across the UK and the Middle East. His PhD focused on the Iron Age of West Central Scotland\, and he currently works for Archaeology Scotland\, leading the Clyde Valley Archaeological Research Framework.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This talk will explore the trajectories of grazing and hunting landscapes in Glencoe considering the role of passes\, and settlements in connecting the communities of this landscape. Through recent excavations at the ‘summerhouse of MacIain’ the local and global connections of the MacDonald Chiefs has been explored reshaping in many ways our understanding of how status and power were negotiated and performed by local elites in the early modern Highlands. From surveys in the Lairigs and Rannoch Moor we will explore the changing use and management of these landscapes. Through explorations of both this field practice and the collections of the Glencoe Folk Museum some of the creative approaches to engagement deployed by this project will be discussed. \nBio: Edward Stewart is a PhD researcher at the University of Glasgow with research interests in the archaeologies of uplands\, estates and urbanism in the 16th-19th C. His current research explores the relationships between shieling practice and related upland practices in the post-medieval Highlands. Eddie is co-director on the University of Glasgow field school in Glencoe’ that’d be fab He has directed excavations of shieling huts in Glencoe and Cochno Hill and walkover surveys in Glencoe\, Mar lodge\, Canna\, Sanday and Glen Shiel.
